Certificado de registro UE

Certificado de registro UE Granada: the green certificate

Europeans (EU, EEA and Swiss nationals) whose stay in Granada goes beyond three months register with the Policía Nacional on form EX-18 and receive the certificado de registro, a small green sheet or card with their NIE on it. If you never had a number, it is assigned at the same appointment.

Who has to register

Registration is for Europeans whose life is now in Spain: employees, the self-employed, students, retirees and anyone with sufficient means of their own. A stay of less than three months does not call for it, though many exchange students register anyway once a lease or a bank account asks for the number.

Relatives who do not hold a European passport follow another procedure and receive an EX-19 card of their own rather than the certificate.

What the police ask you to show

  • Form EX-18, completed and signed
  • Your passport or ID card, in date, and a photocopy
  • The 790-012 receipt, stamped by the bank
  • Evidence of your circumstances: an employment contract or a Social Security registration if you work, proof of self-employment if you are autónomo, the enrolment and health cover if you study, and otherwise sufficient means and health cover
  • The confirmation of your cita previa

After the appointment

In most cases you walk out with the certificate in hand. It bears no photograph, so it only ever travels alongside your passport or ID card. After five years of residence, the permanent version can be requested.

Once you have it, register on the padrón if you have not yet done so: the health centre, schools and the procedures of any relatives who join you will ask for it.

The two addresses in Granada

Two official pages, two addresses. For the Delegación del Gobierno, numbers, European registrations and cards are a matter for the police unit of San Agapito 2; for the police directory, for the Brigada on Calle La Palmita. The University of Granada sends its students to San Agapito 2. No date on either page settles it, so let the confirmation decide: whichever office it prints is expecting you.

  • Calle San Agapito 2

Oficina de Extranjería de Granada, Dependencia del Cuerpo Nacional de Policía

    Address
Calle San Agapito 2, corner of Ribera del Beiro, 18071 Granada
    Hours
Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 14:00

According to the Delegación del Gobierno page: TIE cards, NIE certificates and assignment, residence certificates, the EU citizens’ regime, return authorisations, stay extensions and Brexit procedures.

The police unit sits inside the Subdelegación del Gobierno’s Oficina de Extranjería, which also decides residence and work authorisations and the EU family member card. Email for documentation: documentacionextranjeria.granada@correo.gob.es.

  • Calle La Palmita s/n

Brigada Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras de Granada

    Address
Calle La Palmita s/n, 18014 Granada
    Hours
Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 14:00 (Delegación del Gobierno page)

According to the police directory: TIE issue, NIE certificates and assignment, the EU citizens’ regime, travel documents and cédulas, stay extensions, invitation letters, return authorisations, students, non-lucrative residence and asylum.

The Delegación del Gobierno page lists a narrower set at this address: statelessness, stay extensions, cédulas, travel documents, invitation letters, and asylum and refuge.

Neither official page gives public transport directions to these offices, and we print none we cannot source. Plan your route the day before.

Questions

Is the green certificate the NIE?

Not quite: the certificate is a paper, and the NIE is the code printed on it. Anyone who already received a number through an EX-15 will find that same number repeated there.

Which health cover does a student show?

A European Health Insurance Card valid for the whole stay, or a comprehensive private policy, are the usual answers. The University’s guide for incoming students lists what it expects.

Should I be on the padrón first?

Not necessarily. The registration rests on the form, your passport and the proof of your situation, though some desks ask for the padrón certificate as well, and other procedures will soon need it: registering your address early costs nothing.
