NIE and TIE for students at the Universidad de Granada
International students in Granada need papers that depend on their passport and the length of their stay, not on their faculty: Europeans staying more than three months register on form EX-18, and students on a visa for more than six months book TIE fingerprints after arriving.
Students from the Union
Students from the Union, the EEA or Switzerland can travel on their ID card alone. Staying past three months, they file the EX-18 and leave the appointment with the green certificate and its NIE; the enrolment at the University and their health cover are the proof of their situation.
Students from outside the Union
A student visa issued by a Spanish consulate covers the entry. When the stay is longer than six months, the TIE comes next: register on the padrón, pay the fee, book the TIE fingerprints, bring form EX-17, then collect the card. For shorter stays the visa itself is the document for its whole duration.
Extending a student stay for another academic year is requested in Spain before the authorisation runs out, with the new enrolment and proof of your results.
University services worth knowing
Among the pages of the University’s international office is a guide to the legal procedures for incoming students, walking through the EX-18 and EX-17 routes and the 790-012 fee. Doctoral candidates, researchers and visiting staff can also turn to the International Welcome Centre, in the Centro de Transferencia Tecnológica on Gran Vía 48.

Questions
I am a European on Erasmus for one semester. Do I need anything?
Only if the semester runs past three months: then the EX-18 registration applies. Under three months nothing is required, although a NIE still helps with leases, bank accounts and phone contracts.
Can I take a job during my studies?
Yes, within limits: students from outside the Union may work under conditions set by the regulation, as long as the work is compatible with their studies. Read the conditions of your own authorisation before you accept a contract.
Does the University book the appointment for me?
No. The University explains the procedure and supplies your enrolment documents; the cita previa is booked by you, or by someone acting for you, on the national system.
