Padrón municipal

Empadronamiento Granada: registering your address

Empadronamiento in Granada means entering your address in the padrón, the register of residents the city keeps: by appointment at one of the Ayuntamiento’s Oficinas de Información y Registro, booked on citaprevia.granada.org, or online with a digital certificate. The TIE fingerprint appointment, the health centre and schools will ask you to prove it.

Booking

The city’s electronic office lists the procedure as “Padrón: Alta / Cambio domicilio”, handled by the Sección de Padrón, and offers two ways in: at a counter, on a date reserved through citaprevia.granada.org, or from home through the sede electrónica, signing with a digital certificate. Anyone who habitually lives in Granada can file it.

The Oficinas de Información y Registro

The appointment portal lists these nine offices. It does not say which of them take padrón appointments, so check the procedure when you choose one.

Papers for the padrón desk

  • The hoja de empadronamiento, filled in and signed by every adult it lists
  • A valid identity document, in this order of preference: DNI; a residence card or similar showing the NIE; the EU registration certificate together with your passport or national identity card; a passport
  • For children: the libro de familia, a civil registry certificate or the equivalent foreign document; when only one parent registers them, the authorisation form signed by both, with their original IDs
  • Proof that you use the home: a purchase deed less than a year old; or the current rental contract (with the last rent receipt if it has been extended) plus a water, electricity or gas bill in the landlord’s name from the last six months; or a water, electricity or gas bill in your own name from the last six months
  • A declaration that you were not registered before, if that is the case or you do not know your previous municipality
  • When someone authorises your registration in their home: their original ID, and the proof of use of the home listed above

Questions

My landlord will not give me a contract. Can I still register?

The Ayuntamiento accepts other proofs of use of the home, such as a utility bill in your name, or registration with the authorisation of a person who already lives there, with their original ID.

Can I register with my passport, before I have a NIE?

Yes. The passport is on the list of accepted identity documents, after the DNI, the residence card and the EU certificate. Many newcomers register before their NIE, precisely because the TIE appointment asks for the padrón.

Is registration the same as the certificate?

No. Registration puts you on the register; the certificado de empadronamiento is the paper that proves it. Ask for the certificate you need, since the TIE file and other procedures want the paper.
